The 8th of March marks a major global event; International Women’s Day; a celebration of women’s achievements in day-to-day social scenarios, economic, cultural and political instances.

The #BalanceforBetter campaign aims to drive home the message that gender balance is essential for a better working world, something we at Fishtank feel passionately about. With a 50% split of male and female colleagues, we can fully get behind that truth: the great balance in our Tank makes for a fantastic work environment.

Gender balance is a real driver of growth and improvement in the workplace; if you don’t want to take our word for it, take Sodexo’s:

Last year, we set out to explore the correlation between gender-balanced management teams and key performance indicators such as employee engagement, brand awareness, client retention, and financial metrics. We analyzed data from 50,000 managers across 90 entities around the world and the results are compelling. They clearly show that teams with a male–female ratio between 40 and 60 percent produce results that are more sustained and predictable than those of unbalanced teams.

Our research, for instance, shows that between 2010 and 2012, the employee engagement rate of gender-balanced teams around the world increased by an average of four percentage points, against an average of one percentage point in the case of unbalanced teams.

We believe in letting all our employees learn from each other, draw from each other experiences. This broadens their horizons and equips them with more understanding which can only benefit everyone involved! A good example is our Digital Marketer, Hayley, who with the assistance of our dev team, has taken to the world of code. Did you know only 1 in 5 Computer Science graduates are women? And whilst in 1995 37% of computer scientist were women, this figure decreased to only 24% today; that is why we want to ensure that there are copious amounts of opportunities to learn and develop new skills at Fishtank. Besides – it’s great to see the team working together on more than client projects; we want the Tank to be a space of growth and inspiration for everyone.

Last month, we launched Bradford Women’s Aid new digital platform after a complete brand redesign, helping the charity reposition itself as a safe refuge to all women and children. Bradford Women’s Aid was set up in 1985 to provide safe refuge, accommodation and support services for women, with or without children, experiencing domestic abuse.

The new logo reflects the identity and values Bradford Women’s Aid stand for, reinforcing them as safe asylum as much as a trustworthy and established charity group. Their new website provides both new and returning visitors with all the essential information, useful contact numbers and moving survivors stories to help inspire others and give them the courage they need during trying times.

The handy tabs that follow you as you scroll through the site focus on the three essential functions: a direct contact number to facilitate instant communication, a donate button to support their mission and the ability to close the site with one quick click should a user ever feel in danger when viewing. Enabling women to access help whenever they need was always the main goal of this project and we’re honoured the charity trusted Fishtank with assisting them in such an important process.

Standing strongly behind the #BalanceforBetter campaign, we’re hoping to work with more organisations that help and empower others. If you have an important message to shout from the rooftops, let us hand you the megaphone.

Happy International Women’s Day ladies!
